Exhibition textPOSCO E&C The Sharp Gallery presents THE GREATEST LETTERS, a solo exhibition by Son Sumin, from October 31 to December 28. Using language as a vessel for emotion, Son Sumin unfolds the messages carried by writing and speech in the Catharsis (purification) series. The artist has long explored the “visualization of language,” giving form to the symbolism and emotional depth of words and sentences through a distinctive vocabulary of color, texture and shape.

The Catharsis series is completed through a rigorous process. Repeated text serves as the ground, and by interweaving the tension between abstraction and figuration, the works reveal how the two depend on each other. Patterning in particular — the etching of specific shapes — is an indispensable signature element that defines Son Sumin’s style. Inside three-dimensional seals in red or vivid colors, concise words such as “LOVE,” “HOPE,” “LIFE,” “HEART” and “DESTINY” are inscribed in a contemporary way. The words act as clear carriers of meaning; through familiar vocabulary they announce the intent of each work more distinctly and draw the viewer’s empathy. The handwriting visible beyond the seals and the dot-font texture reminiscent of electronic signboards convey the inner stories and trembling emotions that words cannot fully hold. The sentences on the canvases pass on quotations from figures such as Goethe, Nietzsche, Audrey Hepburn, Hemingway and Hermann Hesse.

In another of the artist’s series, the letters of words such as “YES,” “WARM” and “HOME,” rendered as color fields, are stacked into layers; here too the structure of language is varied through color and form, making the warm materiality of meaning visible.

As we look back on 2025, we hope that, within the grand landscape of language created by the words and colors of these works, you will experience the heartfelt sincerity and resonance that are so easily missed — and rediscover THE GREATEST LETTERS that belong to each of us.

“Above all, these works are beautiful through the content of their texts alone. Each connects to the guidance, insight and essence that human life requires. On this basis, what is interesting is that Son Sumin’s work takes as its starting point a relationship with the length and breadth of the inner ‘I’ and its essence. This comes to the fore as existence unfolds outwardly as a structure, and this externalization of essence manifests an unadorned form of purification, culminating in the Catharsis series we can actually see with our own eyes.” — Hong Kyoung-han, art critic

‘YES’, ‘WARM’, ‘HOME’
