Exhibition textTHE TRINITY at Grand Hyatt Seoul opens 2026 with Light Becoming Time, a solo exhibition by Eunhyea Choi. The exhibition reflects on the “light” and “air” we meet at the beginning of a day — at the starting point of time. Choi delicately captures moments that, like nature’s first dawn, are not yet defined by words — the instant when the boundary between night and day slowly opens and light seeps into time — and carries them into painting. The scenes the artist has gathered always rest on some ambiguous threshold. In the works, Choi seeks to hold sensations that waver between what was actually experienced and what remains in memory, between the visible and the invisible. Building up these open layers of sensation with soft colors and forms, Choi records the traces left by a passing, changing world rather than reproducing a single landscape. Instead of strong contrasts or dramatic scenes, the color and emptiness of the canvases carry a quiet, transparent resonance, like morning air just breathed in.

Alongside the ongoing Toned Landscape series, the exhibition presents many new works, including the latest pieces from a residency in Paris. Taking the sense of light, space and memory as their starting point, Midnight Reflections and Blue Hour Reflections show how places encountered in life linger, as time passes, as faint and lyrical scenes. Gap of Memory works like a passage to another layer beyond the world we perceive, quietly revealing the distance between observer and object, experience and memory. Parc de Bercy, Parc de Sceaux and After the Light, made during a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris in the summer of 2025, draw on scenes the artist gathered in Paris, the city of romance and art, while observing moments where the rhythm of the city and the changing face of nature overlap.

In Light Becoming Time, Choi unfolds a kind of painting that treats light not as the material of an image but as a form of time. Layered fields of color and suspended emptiness do not reproduce a momentary landscape; they show how the sense of the “here and now” passes into memory. Before them, disappearance and change appear not as lack but as the conditions under which the world is composed anew, and by following these subtle transitions we learn to read the time of the senses afresh. The exhibition asks — quietly, yet clearly — what we see and what we leave behind at the starting point of time.
