Exhibition textShin Sun Mi, who has painted the hidden sides of life with “ant fairies” — beings of pure, childlike innocence — as witnesses, presents in this exhibition a Hwasil Sosa (畵室小史): a small history of the artist’s own studio. Of particular interest is the new work The Story of a Color Painting, in which the time of the artist’s everyday life has itself become the subject. The space is curated so that earlier works and new pieces surround The Story of a Color Painting, as if the beings in the paintings, once there only to be observed, had stepped out of their frames to watch the artist creating them. Artist and characters break down the wall between reality and the painted world and meet in a single time and place. The arrangement, like a game of swapped roles, is interesting in itself: through this reversal of viewpoint the studio — a deeply private space — becomes a public stage that invites visitors to play along. The long, patient hours of sizing the paper and drawing ink lines turn into a joyful scene, cheered on by the characters the artist has created and by the audience alike. This is what Shin Sun Mi’s solo exhibition Hwasil Sosa (畵室小史) sets out to convey.

1. The Story of a Color Painting (채색화 이야기, 2026) — The centerpiece of the exhibition shows, like a panorama, the many “selves” absorbed in work in the studio and the process of that work. By visualizing the sizing, sketching and coloring needed to complete a single color painting, it conveys both the sublimity of the artistic labor accumulated in the studio and the deep absorption of creation.

2. The Girl Jayeong (소녀 자영, 2025) — A still moment in which a girl in a red skirt, a book before her, communes with a butterfly. The flowers and ant fairies above her head lead viewers into the instant where dream and reality blur.

3. Once upon a time series (2023) — The tender story of a man and a woman in hanbok: meeting, parting and waiting. The fox gazing at the woman in the mirror, and the woman who seems to be turning into a fox, create a mysterious atmosphere in which legend and reality overlap.

4. Deokhye 3 (덕혜 3, 2024) — A figure in a splendid golden dragon robe and another in red ceremonial dress hold each other in a close embrace; the small fairies surrounding them suggest that this warm embrace is an eternal consolation beyond reality. If we recall for a moment the life of Princess Deokhye, we can feel, through this series, the artist’s warmth toward a woman who lived a tragic life.

5. Meeting Again 11 (다시 만나다 11, 2016) — A large girl pulls a sled carrying little fairies, as if the big being who has always been cared for were now thanking the small ones. Using contrasts of scale to set the everyday against the fantastic, the work offers a glimpse of Shin Sun Mi’s characteristically humorous and warm world.

In a fast-changing world, Shin Sun Mi’s practice of layering color dozens of times on jangji paper is itself a history of time recorded in painting — a history that does not remain a record of the past but comes to us as a beautiful reality breathing beside us now.

To all of you who have opened the studio door and stepped, with fluttering hearts, into this space beyond the everyday: please walk slowly, together with the fairies in the paintings, through landscapes steeped in the artist’s time.

3. Once upon a time
